After 13 days’ tough negotiations, United Nations Climate Change Conference Cancun - COP 16 / CMP 6 finally came to the end on the early morning of December 11 with agreement on some resolutions. COP 16 has insisted on United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Kyoto Protocol and Bali roadmap as well as the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. It also made different progress on issues like technology transfer and capacities building which developing countries pay high attention on. That also sent a positive signal to the international community. But the parties still have not reached an agreement on the most controversial issue of Kyoto Protocol's second commitment period. And the uncertainty of this key issue also made the global carbon trading market wait and see.
The gloom of Kyoto Protocol's second commitment period also made the future of CDM full of uncertainty, which also made domestic CDM market once dwindling. Although no one knows for sure that how will the CDM function after 2012, some practitioners still get the hope that the market will be booming again in the future.
Moreover, the greenhouse gas initiative carried out by developing countries also will impel the development of carbon market. There is no doubt that the mechanism of emissions reduction will provide developing countries with a new method of reducing emissions.
